COMMUNICATION

Please know that open communication is essential in order for this school year to be happy, productive, and filled with lots of new learning experiences.  If you have questions or concerns, you may reach me through either email or my voicemail.  I make it a habit to check my voicemail after school each day.  I also check my email periodically throughout the day.  I ask that during the day, you call the main office (303-347-4750) with messages for your children, as I cannot be sure that they will be delivered to you child that day.

TAKE HOME/THURSDAY FOLDERS
Tests and special informational papers will be sent home in the Take Home Folders on Thursday.  Additionally, school wide notices will be included in the Take Home Folders. Tests and special informational papers will be sent home in the Take Home Folders on Thursday. Please sign and comment the folder weekly. Return the folder promptly. Take Home Folders are due back to school on the following Tuesday.

Additionally, your students will help to write he grade level newsletter, Newsy Notes, which is sent out monthly. The year our newsletter will be emailed to all parents unless a paper copy is requested.

HOMEWORK FOLDER
Morning work, daily reading and math papers will be sent home as they are completed. Students will also bring homework home daily in math and weekly in spelling in their Homework Folders.

ABSENCES
Anytime that your child is going to be absent from school, please remember to call the absence into the main office. While your child is absent from class, we will collect all missed work in a folder that will be available upon his/her return.  Because class work and homework are directly related to each day's lessons, I am unable to create work packets for your child to work from while absent or on vacation.  All work is available upon your return.

BIRTHDAYS
Your child's birthday (and 1/2 birthday) are wonderful opportunities to celebrate a special occasion with classmates.  Students are welcome to bring "treats" in to share with the class; however, students are not required to do so.  If you do choose to bring treats in to share with the class, please be aware that many students do have food/nut allergies.  As a class, we will celebrate birthdays at the end of the day, between 3:20 and 3:35.

NOTES AND BUS NOTES
If you are sending a note to me with your child, please remind your child in the morning that they have a note for Miss Kreutz. Additionally, if you plan to have your child ride the bus (one other than their assigned bus) home with another student, please remember that a signed note is required.  Your child will not be allowed to ride a bus other than their own home without a note from you.

SNACKS
Each day during morning recess, students are allowed to have a healthy snack.  Some possible healthy snacks are a piece of fruit, carrot sticks, a granola bar, or pretzels.  Please don't send candy, cookies, chips, or soda.

TLC: THINK! LEARN! CHANGE!
Over the course of the first week of school, we have discussed our classroom expectations for behavior in second grade. These expectations were brainstormed, discussed, and agreed upon by our class. Students decided on five classroom rules that would help to ensure we will have a successful year together. Our five classroom rules are as follows:
  1. I will listen carefully when the teacher or my classmate is talking.
  2. I will follow directions.
  3. I will work quietly.
  4. I will use kind words and actions both in the classroom/playground.
  5. I will work and play safely at all times.
Throughout the course of the week, students are expected to follow these classroom and playground rules, in order to ensure that all the students in the classroom are best able to learn, complete work, and most importantly enjoy the learning process and have a great day everyday! Students occasionally need reminders of appropriate behavior or what the expectations are of them as second grade students. If a child is disruptive in the class or is a distraction to other student’s learning, they will first receive a warning. After a warning, if the behavior continues, a student will receive a CHECK. Over a weeks time, if a student receives four (4) CHECKS s/he will go to TLC on Friday afternoon. If a student does not turn in the assigned homework by the designated due date, the student will receive a CHECK.

TLC is the opportunity for a student to Think about his or her behavior over the course of the week and why s/he received four CHECKS; Learn from their mistakes; and make a plan to Change their behavior for the coming week. Students in TLC on Friday afternoon will write a letter home to mom and dad explaining why s/he is in TLC for the week, and will explain the plan for the upcoming week. This letter will come home Friday afternoon, and needs to be signed and returned Monday to the classroom teacher.

Students not in TLC on Friday will receive an extra recess or other “fun” activity as a reward for a great week.

HOMEWORK
Homework is given not only to review and reinforce skills, but also to instill responsibility in your child. It is important, and expected, that homework be completed and returned by the due date. Homework is your child’s responsibility. A set time and place for homework would help your child develop organizational skills. Second grade students are expected to spend from 15 to 30 minutes daily on homework.
 -  Math homework, known as Home Links, is sent home daily (Monday through  Thursday), and is due the following day.
- Spelling homework is sent home on Monday and is due the day of our spelling test, Friday. We encourage the children to bring homework back the next day and no later than the day specified.
Reading calendars (400 minutes per month) are due the last school day of each month.
- Practice math facts.

 Second Grade CurriculumMinimize
READING
Your child is ability grouped for reading instruction. Literacy and our literacy series are integrated along with out total reading program. Student responses to literature and skill activities are written in logs and that are kept at school. Knowledge comprehension questions are addressed as well as higher level thinking skills. This integrates the reading and writing process. Occasionally, your child will be bringing home a story along with questions that supports what s/he is reading in the classroom.

We use a variety of quality paperback literature sets that have been district approved. These books are used in conjunction with Houghton Mifflin. Our reading program provides support to emerging readers as they develop their reading strategies; such as skip unknown words, go to the end of the sentence and then re-read the sentence to find what makes sense. The use of leveled readers provides appropriate reading materials addressing individual student needs.

The following reading strategies are introduced, taught, and reinforced throughout the year: summarizing, predicting, retelling, sequencing, literal/inferential thinking, main ideas and details, comparing and contrasting, vocabulary development, story elements, glossary and dictionary skills.

This year we will use a monthly reading calendar. The reading calendar is a home program to encourage reading for enjoyment. The children are expected to read at least 400 minutes each month. They will bring home a calendar to record the books and minutes read each day. Books can be chosen from school or any outside source. The reading calendars continue throughout the school year. Reading calendars are due the last school day of each month. The reading calendar is an ongoing homework assignment to be done nightly.

WRITING
This year we will continue to emphasize the writing process. It is incorporated into our language arts time block. The children will write from their experiences and knowledge background to stimulate their creativity. We will also be giving prompts at various times to help prepare them for future test taking.

We emphasize developmental spelling and expect all core list words to be spelled correctly. As you know, writing is a cross-curricular skill, and we encourage the children to use complete sentences are all times. We also routinely conference with the children regarding story content and skills. We often close each workshop session with a time for sharing individual writings.

PHONICS AND SPELLING
Phonics skills are incorporated into all language arts areas. The following phonics skills are taught/reinforced: all vowel sounds, blends and digraphs, contractions, word families, compound words, possessives, silent letters, plurals, homophones, synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, and root words.

For spelling, all students will be pre-tested to determine the core words that will be taught during the year. From that list, six words will be selected each week, along with skill words and bonus words. Spelling tests are given weekly. Spelling words and a weekly homework page will be sent home on Monday. Students should complete the homework and return it by Friday, the same day as the spelling test.

Spelling in second grade emphasizes high-frequency words, which make up their core list (number 1-6). Additional words are selected based on the spelling rule taught for the week (number 7-12). Bonus words are chosen based on the science or social studies unit currently being studied.

The spelling grade is determined by the student’s ability to apply their spelling words in writing. Spelling will start on September 2, 2008. It is imperative that students be responsible for homework assignments on a weekly basis and study their words daily.

MATH
Second Grade Everyday Mathematics is the math program that we will be working from this school year. Everyday Mathematics is a part of an elementary school mathematics curriculum developed by the University of Chicago Mathematics Project. The program is designed around four basic principles:

-         A problem-solving approach to mathematics based on everyday situations;
-         Frequent practice of basic skills
-         An instructional sequence that revisits concepts regularly or “spirals”
-         A curriculum that explores mathematical content beyond basic arithmetic

Additionally, Second Grade Everyday Mathematics emphasizes the following content:
-         Numeration
-         Operations and computation
-         Data and chance
-         Geometry
-         Measurement
-         Reference frames (use clocks, calendars, thermometers, number lines)
-         Patterns, functions, and algebra

Math homework, referred to as Home Links, will be sent home daily (Monday through Thursday) and are to be completed and returned the following day. The focus of each day’s Home Links coincides with the lesson taught that day in class.

Additional information regarding this program’s implementation in your child’s classroom will be distributed at Back-to-School night.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES
The second grade social studies curriculum will include a study of Colonial America and pioneer Littleton. Other units of study will be communities, government, map skills and the continents.

The science curriculum in second grade includes: weather, heat and light, plants, and everyone’s favorite, dinosaurs are the units covered.
